Current instance only gives you 50 attempts total for the entire week over the course of all 5 boss encounters. Hence you're limited in face time and efficiency is rewarded with better/more gear. 45+ attempts left gives more gear then 25 attempts left, and so forth. The brackets for it are 1-24 wipes left, 25-44, 45-49, and 50.

The Onyxia kill doesn't have a bearing on the ranking. Basically the way it seems like it works is the ranking is based on the combination of points from Call of the Grand Crusade (which was just completing 25 man hard mode) plus the Tribute to (Skill, Mad Skill, or Insanity, the highest one you've completed).

So a guild like STARS got Call a week or two before ER did, but got Tribute to Mad Skill the same week we did, so their overall points total makes them slightly higher.

Getting kills later due to us not raiding Tuesdays hurts us too on points like the Beasts encounter I believe.
